Martial Art is a lifelong pursuit after entering into it through some discipline.  As we grow and as we learn our teachers, our masters, are the most influential characters on our own personal journeys.  While many will take courses for their belts and explore, enter into different disciplines for this reason or that, the majority of students end up forgetting about their training after a poor or averse experience, or leaving it behind as if pursuit was meant for a past life. 

 

 

 

 

We train here, we train you to learn something.  To bring something home with you.  Coming here you will leave with something to keep and know forever.  A physical exercise, the next movements of a kata or form, a movement explained to open your mind to the meaning behind, a lesson about ego.  Coming to our school to learn here means you are ready to be helped, you are ready to learn, you are open minded and serious about real martial arts and real fitness in all their aspects.

Calasanz on the birth and development of his system.

The birth of my system I must say coincides with my very birth. From the day I was born I’ve known the natural workings of the human body. How it works, how to optimize. Even when I was a child in karate class, I would hide my movements from my instructor because I didn’t want to get in trouble.

Throughout my years I’ve learned to apply the knowledge I was born with regarding the functional movements of the body to real fighting situations and have also developed it into a physical system for naturally improving the body. The system is called Physical Arts. It utilizes natural holistic movements and is aimed at the long term development and maintenance of the human body over a lifetime.

This is not a “get ripped” program. It is not a superficial body building regimen. It is Physical Arts. It is making your body into a walking masterpiece. Welcome to Calasanz Physical Arts.

Over my lifetime I have spent every day dedicated to martial arts. Somehow I knew from the time I was a child that this was my calling. The first martial arts school I attended was a Karate School. Upon visiting this school I noticed that there were a lot of punches landing between the two contenders, too many. For me fighting is not trading blows and determining the winner by who has the best physique. A real fighter will defend against an attack and then try to connect with the target. While the karate approach may be a good way to condition the body to take a punch, it is not real fighting.

Real fighting is common sense.

First, be aware that your body performs best when it is in perfect working order. To have a broken arm in a fight is a great disadvantage when fighting a two armed man. Protecting the physical body is of primary importance in a fight. It is essential and foundational. Your body being in perfect working order gives you the best chance of survival. This is achieved by blocking or evading successfully. Essentially, a good defense is imperative.

The next element of real fighting is to be able to disable or eliminate the threat to your physical body as quickly as possible. This is achieved through Wing Chun. The body that remains fully functional for longer and acts most efficiently and effectively is bound to prevail.

Now we come to size. Size is something a lot of people deem to be a good judge of strength and even fighting ability. Often times people will fear an opponent due to sheer size. Let us consider now, two rifles aimed towards two watermelons. Place in front of one, 10 inches of marshmallows. Place in front of the other 1 inch of steel. Which watermelon would you stand behind if the triggers were flicked? Size doesn’t seem to matter much now. While it should be taken into consideration, it is not always of great importance, and this is no different when it comes to fighting. Similarly the size of the man matters not, but it is his mettle, his character, what he is actually capable of that holds greater bearing.

It has been proven again and again in the real world, as well as in boxing, and other martial sports. Frequently a larger opponent with an incredible physique is set against a smaller man who’s physique is comparatively lacking. While the larger man seems more formidable, this is merely in appearance. It has been seen repeatedly that a contender inferior in stature can easily be victorious with superior technique. A phenomenal physique can only give someone an advantage up to a point. If technique is lacking and a contender’s offense is unwieldy, it is easy for a proficient fighter to penetrate and take advantage of an opponents untrained flailing, capitalize on exposed vulnerabilities, and dismantle his opponent. It is important to realize that just because you have the biggest body it does not mean that you are capable of functionally using that body to be effective in a fight.

Street fighters, for example, believe they are good fighters based on the fact that they are aggressive and willing to fight. However, when a street fighter squares off with someone who is a trained and an accomplished practitioner of the art it is clear within seconds that their overly aggressive approach does not work. I experienced this first hand in the early 80’s when street fighters would challenge me and my students constantly. No doubt in an attempt to debunk me personally and the system I have come to develop. In time I would place a sign on the door welcoming challengers. I remember two gentlemen distinctly, Jay and Kenny.

I met these two gentlemen in Norwalk in 1987 after attending the same gym for a time called George’s Gym. Jay, at this point, was considered the biggest body builder in CT. He also did not like me very much when I started going to that gym and everybody wondered how long I would stay there given his disposition. Kenny, now, was known at this time as the “Terror of Norwalk”. Everybody knew him either from getting in trouble or simply knowing of his preceding reputation of beating young guys. George’s Gym at this time had, without a doubt, some of the toughest street fighters coming through there, not to mention some volatile body builders as well. I remember telling somebody, “I need one week here before everybody is training under me.” And it was just exactly that which ended up happening. After demonstrating to Jay my power, speed, endurance, and grounding, based purely on martial arts skill, Jay signed with me immediately for a month of private training. I remember, also, Jay being at the gym pressing 1500 to 2000 pounds with his legs using a machine.

One day I put Jay to the test and asked him to pick up his leg and push against my stomach. Jay could not even do so much as make me budge, and in less than a second I was showing Jay a new way under my system. There was a difference of understanding between our two mindsets. In his mind, and in that of much of the Western world, to push iron and pack muscle onto his frame was the ideal. This is achieved through monotonous movement and mechanical repetition creating tight, inflexible muscle.

In my mind natural, flexible, long muscle built through physical art is what brings the ideal into fruition. This is achieved through exercising motions that naturally accommodate the anatomy of the human body and develop real strength by engaging the entire body as a whole. Synchronizing breath and motion into pure, fluid, natural, transformative moments of life itself. To this day he remains a faithful convert.

Kenny, on the other hand is a bit of a different story. He is 6′ 5″ and always made his mark on his opponents. As we continued to spend time in the same building his frustration with me continued to fester and grow. He eventually took the liberty to invite every member of the gym to come and see how easily he would defeat me. The terror of Norwalk once more coming against an opponent to validate his status in front of everyone; his ego eager for all to gather and see for its own satisfaction. Only this time he did not know who he was up against, me, Calasanz.

On that day, the fight was over almost as soon as it began. We touched fists, and from that moment sympathy ceased to exist. The fight, it had to be stopped in less than 10 seconds after a single blow. I had placed the heal of my foot into Kenny’s hips, and after taking the shot Kenny’s gait was knocked off its axis and he would not walk properly for a time afterwards. The kick was powerful enough to nearly dislocate Kenny’s hips and caused stop to his offense immediately. I can’t remember if he ever came back.

After that day I ended up training many of these street fighters, and I trained them for free. Over time they would go to competitions and compete in my stead. Within three years the name Calasanz was recognized all over the United States and even internationally. Fighters under my system were making significant impressions every where they went spreading the name, Calasanz. One competition in particular stands out in my mind, one involving KYOKUSHINKAI where two of my students won. Each of them competing within their own brackets and finishing on top.

Looking closer now at the KYOKUSHINKAI practice itself, it is a brutal form of martial arts popularized in the 1980’s. When competing, full force kicks are thrown towards opponents’ heads or anywhere else for that matter and no protective gear is used. Punches are allowed but are only directed towards the chest. Often times in a KYOKUSHINKAI tournament there will be a great number of knock downs and knock outs from head kicks. The kick being the most powerful weapon an unarmed fighter possesses, you can imagine the danger in combating someone trained in this practice. My students competed with full confidence and continued to win the tournament in their respective brackets.

Again, keep in mind that at this time KYOKOSHINKAI was a very popular martial art with a multitude of dedicated practitioners making it vital for a competitor to practice as more than just a hobby. In such brutal competition one must really have their wits about them else he may get knocked out, or even killed, very quickly. My students showed their talents. Both of them victorious under my coaching and Physical Arts Body Development system.

“Siam does not teach anymore.”

“Siam does not teach anymore.”  This is a phrase you hear in regards to ancient martial arts. Today, those older, more traditional forms have been modified, especially here in America.

Being born with a gift for martial arts, being aware of the fact that when you train in the correct martial art, you can say age does not exist, it is not just that you are working out but rather what kind of work out are you doing. If a grand master comes and sees you training, immediately they would know what kind of physical activity you participate in. If you are at a gym pumping weights, do you know that all you are doing is taking years off your life?  There is a way that you can do things differently and turn your training into your best advantage. That is when we say, “Age is just a number, you can beat it.” But how many do it? Let’s makes it clear, aging occurs, you get more mature and you get older, but you can turn it around and even when you are 90 years old, you could be capable of doing anything that a 35, 40, 45 year old can do. First find the facts, find the logic, find the science, and above all else, find common sense to what you are doing.

95% of the population is not doing the right training, including those who do physically demanding work but still are not gaining much. People are going to a fitness centers, or doing martial arts are not adapting training and martial arts into their lives or as their way of life. Here comes the word, “Breathing.” Do you understand the meaning of Breathing? Probably not.  If you see a karate instructor, a physically fit person, or a body builder, approach to them and touch their body or muscle, you will notice the tightness and the amount of force wasted, meaning every second that passes they are taking days, months, or years off their life span just because they are doing something that is not helping them at all. This all comes from not breathing properly. The training that they are engaged in is just hurting them but when they are young and working out, they feel good and do not notice.

All of this knowledge as you get older, become more mature, and gain more intelligence, converts into skill, then skill converts into understanding and that is when you find the answer to the phrase “Siam is not teaching anymore.”  Watch the movie “Kickboxer” starring Jean Claude Van Damme and you will see a lot. When you, as a teacher of the martial arts, primarily Kung Fu, start understanding the secrets behind it, sometimes you want to pull back from making others feel better, helping them live longer and have a better life. All of this is based on the reality of life and that is, if there is not trust on your part towards these people, then it will not work. Yet, many masters still insist on hiding or preserving their secrets and pulling back from teaching, they do not feel that you deserve it and that is the real truth.

Many believe the Chinese have discovered the secret to a longer life. If you understand the beauty of life, the beauty of a longer life, then you would think otherwise. 10 years extra of life, even one year is great, you would see more of this world than you would have seen had you not lived in whatever extra time you were granted by discovering these secrets to longevity.

The reason that Calasanz became so popular and one of the most respected names in the martial arts world is because in the early 80’s he was working 24 hours a day training his guys to promote him and that is exactly what they did. They promoted and made Calasanz’s name, and not just because they looked good doing it. It was because Calasanz, together with his students, were doing the incredible and still doing it, and he does it better in the present day, in a more organized way.

Regardless of my students’ goals, I always like to give them some techniques they could use on the streets.  My private training in Wing Chun was the reason why I have incorporated this philosophy into my system.  I was not happy with the fact that some of my classmates had spent close to ten years training and had no street survival skills.  Many Wing Chun students spent all this time throwing punches without a purpose or sense of how they would use it in real life.  For instance, our Wing Chun classes emphasize bringing your elbow to the center, which helps your punch get very hard and learning how to get grounded.  I was fortunate enough when I began my Goju Ryu training that my teachers promoted self-defense skills and I have passed these skills down to my students.

Schools that promote black belts too quickly or don’t teach self-defense often trouble me. What troubles me more is the aerobic kickboxing craze.  Unfortunately, they give people a false sense of security in believing they’ll be able to defend themselves with a dance routine.  Understand that organizations that certify personal trainers often offer short-term courses or clinics that will teach you how to teach kickboxing.  This is an insult to all of us who have spent many years training in the martial arts and a scam on the public.  In some cases, students who have taken the aerobic kickboxing classes have been injured because of inadequate teacher supervision. While I train students who only want to learn kickboxing for recreation, I always incorporate some realistic movements so they can walk away with something useful.  No one leaves my school without at least some basic knowledge of street survival.

The Calasanz System is very simple.  Simplicity combined with skill allows us to take the best a student has to offer and improve on it.  An example is training women.  Because my style of fighting was always unsuited for tournaments, I found that I had to send “messages” of my skill to those who challenged me because I was not a competitor.  My favorite type of message was asking a female student to do kicking drills with an obnoxious male!  While women’s upper body strength cannot compare to that of a man, women do have naturally strong legs.  I take that ability in women and teach them how to capitalize on it.  Some of the best messages given here at the school were by women who embarrassed arrogant men!

Teaching a diverse population requires a lot of patience and natural skill.  You can train someone to be a teacher all you want.  If they don’t have it inside of them, they will never be effective.  In this business, you have to help not only the talented and coordinated, but also the uncoordinated, the slow learner and the student with a variety of challenges.  It is also a challenge to teach those who are very intelligent.  I had this one student who was very smart and had spent twelve years training in a well known martial arts school.  I was training him in kickboxing and trying to teach him how to protect his head when fighting at close range.  He told me “Calasanz, all I have to do is pick up my hands.  This would cause his opponent to look up, and then I could kick him.”  This guy with twelve years of experience just demonstrated the skill of a white belt.  I recognized was why his instructor had a hard time with him.  This guy thought he knew it all and didn’t need help or correction from anyone.

I earned my reputation as an instructor by training about 25 street fighters.  I was new to this country and interested in creating a name. I chose street brawlers because they had the confidence and endurance to fight.  It was my job to teach them martial arts techniques and self-control necessary for tournaments.  It took me about 3 months to get them ready to fight under my school’s name.  They impressed everyone who saw them fight or perform.  People wanted to know who there instructor was.  This was the first step I took in creating a reputation.  It was the beginning and helped draw more students to my school and win me respect in the community.

In 1986 I rented space out of a hardcore bodybuilding gym called George’s Gym.  It wasn’t the easiest environment to be in.  Some of the bodybuilders were obnoxious and believed that a body built by steroids was all they needed to be good fighters.  I had no doubt however that it would not take long before everyone respected anyone wearing the Calasanz logo.  I told my students that within a few weeks, we would attract a lot of business from the gym.  One of the bodybuilders who came through my door was a 6’4” bully who invited everyone in the gym to come to my school and watch him beat me up.  I aimed a kick to his hipbone and disabled him in 15 seconds.   After this incident, our school was constantly training bodybuilders.  The people who witnessed the fight that day and the bully himself sent us business!  He even went so far as referring his victims to us.  He would tell them “go train with Calasanz so he can teach you how to fight!”  By the way, we sold a lot of clothing bearing the Calasanz logo because my school had earned such a good reputation that people wanted to wear our logo.  The purpose for wearing our clothes was that no one would mess with you if they thought you trained at Calasanz.  This was the name I created.

While I enjoyed training street fighters, it was now time to expand my system to society-at-large.  My new philosophy is to meet the student where he or she is and find out what it is that they want to get out of the martial arts.  I always ask a new student, “do you want to learn how to fight, are you interested in fitness, self-defense or competition?”  Whatever the answer, I tailor a program that will suit a student’s needs.  Regardless of the program they choose, I balance their curriculum so they get a complete taste of the system, while focusing on their particular goal.  We always work with a goal in mind.  I have found that students who train for hours with no particular goal end up getting bored or frustrated.  Every time you walk on the floor to train, you must think about what you want to get out of it.  Training goals should also be adjusted from time to time to reflect a student’s new interests, lifestyle and abilities.  This way, training always has a purpose.

Why I Created “The Calasanz System”: By Calasanz

I have been in the martial arts business for over thirty years.  My school and student membership has grown every year since I started teaching.  I have survived good and bad economic times and have watched my critics open and close their door front dojos.  My school would have closed a long time ago if I didn’t offer valuable services to my students. 

The secret to my success is The Calasanz System™.

I was originally trained in traditional martial arts, but at some point decided that I wanted to be well-rounded athlete.  This was back in the 1970’s when straying away from your traditional style was frowned upon.  Back then, there was no such thing as “eclectic” martial art styles.  You picked a style of karate or kung-fu and stayed with it.  It was considered a big insult to your instructor to even think of training in another dojo.

I decided however to venture out and defy tradition.  The Calasanz System™ was created during my martial arts journey. I found the traditional hard style karate I studied in the Dominican Republic was too limiting. I studied Wing Chun Kung Fu to balance it out.  I liked its softness and economy of motion.  All too often, karate practitioners rely way too much on their feet, so I went to Gleason’s Gym to learn how to use my hands.  I studied Cheng Chuan Kung Fu and Wu Style Kung Fu for its artistry and philosophy. The combination of styles improved my overall skill, so I integrated all of their best elements into my training.

I also developed an appreciation for physical training.  I incorporated the use of weights and stretching exercises into my martial arts classes, as well as my own workouts.  I trained men, women and children and had to create workouts and classes that catered to their needs.  I trained boxers, streetfighters and corporate executives.  Each of my students has taught me something about how the human body works and responds to training.

Thirty years later, I took all my knowledge and pulled it together into one system.  The result was a martial arts training system that produces results.  The Calasanz System™ teaches you how to defend yourself. Its physical arts component helps you create a strong, flexible and healthy body. Unlike so many martial arts schools, I am still in business.  The reason is that the system works.

Phsyical Arts Exercises: The Making of a Better Body Figure

Physical Arts helps you to reach your goals faster.  It is important to get your technique to flow.  This will cause a greater circulation of the “chi” or internal energy we all have.  When techniques aren’t smooth, it’s like a “kink” in a hose.  The energy gets stopped up and the water can’t flow.  Once we get out the “kinks,” then the flow of energy will allow you to train with more vigor and help you achieve a fit, healthy figure.  I designed my Physical Arts Exercises around this principle.

Please understand that there are people who just come to Calasanz for physical conditioning rather than going to a traditional gym because they get a better workout at his dojo with exercises such as these. You are right. This is not bodybuilding, which most people, in particularly women are not interested in.
