Welcome to the New Age

We here like to work by commitment.  Our programs are unique and effective.  Why?  Because we are not here to give you a good workout, although you will get the best lesson, the best workout of your life if you come here to learn.

We do not want people who come for a work out.  We want people who come to invest.  People who understand that their time spent here is an investment in themselves mentally, physically and spiritually.  Our school is called a school for a reason, because we are here to teach and to promote learning.  Real learning of real Martial Arts.

When it comes to martial arts it’s sometimes difficult to say what it is that has been learned but just understand that, during a lesson, within every word uttered and every vision captured there is a meaning and a message being conveyed.  Sometimes it is as simple as the opening of one’s eyes or the true comprehension of a sentence correctly interpreted in order to actualize real and proper change, real and proper learning.  Sometimes even a single word can be enough to spark a colossal shift within a person.

Note, noone on this Earth is perfect and we have all made our mistakes.  But now there is an ever growing need to push forward without looking back.  Towards a collaborative progression with the collective understanding of our reality’s great limitation;  that the past cannot be undone.  But the future holds all glorious potential within it.  It comes down to the question of, “Will we do what is necessary in the present to help that future come to fruition?”

So that is why we work under commitment.  In becoming a student anywhere there has already been an expectation levied on the teacher to teach, but this expectation is not one sided as the student is expected to learn or at least try to learn.  Will you open your mind to learning?  Will you allow yourself that creative freedom?  Will you take the responsibility to think for yourself?  To hold yourself accountable?  And will you give yourself that chance at self redemption?  At self creation?

Our school’s goal is to train you to train yourself.  We give you lessons, exercises and techniques and explain how to perform them without getting hurt.  Once you’ve learned them it is no longer up to us.  This is why we go by commitment.  Those committed, ready and willing to learn will do so.  Others may be missing one of those components and learn little.  Moving on, at a certain point it becomes up to you to see yourself through and continue on in a safe manner.  We do not take the role of a personal trainer to sit and watch you perform the exercises barking demands of [this many] sets at [such and such] resistance.  If you are an adult this is something you should be capable of safely putting yourself to do on your own without the need of an external whip.

Again, when we work your expectation of us is to be taught and our wish to teach you more  in our time spent with you.  After all, stagnancy is death…  So rather we would take the role of doctors in that we want to get you healthy or at least give you the tools and means to become so and get you out to the world.  We have a lot of patients to get to and you have your lives to live.  But as always our sincerely committed and dedicated students are greeted with great welcome upon their return as there is always more to learn and master.

Invest in yourself with a program here to take something home with you.  Something you can learn and apply for yourself for the rest of your life.  Learn. Invest. Adapt. Evolve. Calasanz.

The Martial Arts Alternative: Choosing the Martial Arts for Physical Fitness – By Calasanz

Have you ever considered the martial arts alternative? Many adults are disgusted with the run-of-the-mill fitness centers and have looked to the martial arts as a way to get into shape. Martial art training can provide you with all the benefits of physical exercise without the circus-type atmosphere of the average health club.

The traditional martial arts curriculum is designed to develop your overall fitness level. Classes always include some flexibility training in the form of stretching exercises. The various movements and techniques that you practice during class help develop your cardiovascular health, as well as stamina and focus. The modern martial arts instructor welcomes students who are looking for a fitness alternative and has gone out of his or her way to incorporate strength training either with lightweights and/ or resistance exercises.

When you go to a gym, you may get a few sessions with a personal trainer as part of your membership package. Once that’s finished, you’re basically on your own unless you want to pay for more sessions. What’s nice about martial art training is that as you advance through the curriculum through some type of belt or sash grading system, more is expected of you physically. By following the curriculum laid out by your instructor, you progress to higher levels of fitness. In the meantime, you are learning to defend yourself!

Martial arts classes are also fun! Working through the various levels in the style you have chosen is both challenging and exciting. You’ll have a sense of pride and accomplishment that you’ll never get jogging aimlessly on some treadmill!

Children are taught to know themselves at Calasanz Martial Arts.

Calasanz has spent many years working primarily with children and has proven to himself that he can get his message across even to young minds. Other instructors have asked him, “What is your secret? How do you teach martial arts to children so young?” The answer is simple. Calasanz explains that he emphasizes basic techniques which help at a range of different levels.

When Calasanz first went into business and began to promote childrens’ classes a lot of parents were scared to enroll their children at the school. By this time Calasanz had earned a reputation in the area for producing some of the toughest fighters. What the parents did not see and were not aware of is that while Martial Arts training can produce a tough and durable fighter, real Martial Arts training teaches people not to fight. Calasanz emphasizes defense and respect for your Martial Arts knowledge and abilities. He teaches children never to be the aggressor and not to strike your friends, brothers or sisters because they could hurt somebody with their ability.

When it comes to childrens’ martial arts training there innumerable benefits to be reaped from such a pursuit, not all of which are physical. In traditional school or community team sports some children don’t make the final cut to get on the team and while some schools and community programs have tried to remedy this at the end of the day even those that make the team may spend a good deal of time on the bench. In martial arts training every child, regardless of their capabilities is welcomed and capable of practicing and improving themselves. This gives a child a sense of pride, that yes they can participate within a group, and yes, they can engage in physical activity.

Another benefit of the Calasanz System is that a code of conduct is put into place which promotes self-discipline, respect, and courtesy. Those whose purpose of studying martial arts to gain an aggressive edge are quickly set straight. Calasanz encourages a positive respectful attitude both inside and outside of the school.

Training in martial arts will also greatly improve a child’s concentration and attention span. It will increase their physical fitness as well sharpen their mental abilities.

Children who practice the martial arts become aware of their surroundings.

So what type of improvement do children see from the Calasanz system? Well, all of the above plus many amazing physical improvements. Improved coordination, balance, strength, power, grounding, and focus. Through the practicing of drills, coaching, sparring, forms, and katas your children will have strengthened joints and a basic knowledge of aerobic isolation and isometric movements which gives the Calasanz system its unique qualities and ultimately its name.

All of these improvements not only increase a child’s performance in their particular sport, but also in all other areas of their lives. The Calasanz System focuses on building a child by improving not only their body but also their character.

Calasanz Aerobic Kickboxing

Calasanz approach to non-contact, aerobic kickboxing is a unique total body workout that combines cardio, resistance and flexibility training. It’s also a great calorie burner, according to a study conducted by the American Exercise Counsel, which revealed that kickboxing burns hundreds and hundreds of calories per hour. Calasanz Aerobic Kickboxing curriculum is based on over 20 years of experience in martial arts instruction and was developed long before kickboxing became popular in health clubs and figure salons.

In this course, you will first learn the basic conditioning exercises outlined in Calasanz book, Creating the Body You Want, as well as how to stretch properly to avoid injuries. The kickboxing component of the course begins with learning upper body techniques. This includes punches associated with kick boxing – jab, cross, hook and uppercut, as well as elbow strikes. You also learn how to move in a proper fighting stance and how to move forward, backward, and side- to-side. Lower body technique instruction consists of learning front kicks, side kicks, roundhouse kicks and back kicks. The Calasanz blocking system is also part of this curriculum and teaches you how to ward-off an opponent. Once you have learned the basic techniques, you will combine the upper and lower body strikes in a series of combinations designed to give you the maximum aerobic effect. The instructor employs the use of focus mitts and air shields so that you can test your striking techniques on a padded surface. While this is a no contact class, the self-defense aspects of what you are learning are explained. Calasanz Aerobic Kickboxing is a great way to incorporate fitness into your lifestyle, while learning valuable self-defense skills.

Personal Training for Fitness and Self-Defense at Calasanz Martial Arts.

Click this link for more exciting images of Calasanz Martial Art and Fitness!!!

Calasanz, a native of the Dominican Republic and martial arts master, came to the United States in 1979 to pursue his dream of creating a career in the martial arts and making a martial arts movie. He reached his goals by making a feature length film called Crossing The Line, as well as creating one of the country’s most successful martial arts schools. Calasanz has also devoted his life to developing a unique system of physical fitness and martial arts training known as the Calasanz System. His unprecedented approach has made him Connecticut’s leader in his field. In a business where most schools struggle to survive, Calasanz Physical Arts has not only sustained itself but has grown significantly over the last 30 years.

The reason for his popularity and success is that his system appeals to mature adults. Most of you are familiar with America’s standard karate school where students wear white uniforms and with bare feet, follow an instructor who takes them through a series of kicks and punches. Many of you are not interested in this regimented form of training and find its one-size fits all approach does not meet your needs. You want to get fit and feel good. You want no-nonsense self-defense. You want to learn how to react quickly and effectively if confronted with a life-threatening situation. You don’t want to waste time learning countless impractical techniques or earning belts and stripes. You don’t want to earn medals and trophies.

Calasanz success is linked to the creation of a system that meets the needs and lifestyles of adult men and women. A unique characteristic of the Calasanz System is that all of the necessary components of a well-rounded fitness plan are available under one roof. No traveling from class to class, machine to machine. You will find everything you need to get fit, feel good and defend yourself all in one place.

Your training starts with Calasanz body conditioning program. He believes that the most important aspect of training is at the beginning. While he can train anyone to fight, his primary goal is to help you create a well-balanced body. This is done through a series of exercises designed to build strength, flexibility, endurance and coordination. Within a short time, you’ll be learning simple martial art techniques. You’ll get a great workout by practicing basic kickboxing drills, hitting the bag and striking pads held by your coach as he or she provides you with support and encouragement. No fancy, complicated techniques, just simple movements with an emphasis on self-defense.

At Calasanz, you progress at your own rate and are taught by qualified instructors. An individualized program is created for students depending on their goals and fitness levels. Regardless of the program chosen, Calasanz and his instructors create a safe, injury-free training environment. Calasanz philosophy is to teach real physical and martial arts that fit your lifestyle.

You may choose a recreational approach to martial arts training for the purpose of getting fit and learning self-defense or a more competitive program that includes friendly boxing or sparring matches. You have the option of specializing in a variety of martial arts disciplines. Calasanz offers karate, kickboxing, Wing Chun kung fu, American Boxing, and Aerobic Isolation as well as the Calasanz System, which is a combination of those styles. There is so much variety within the system that you’ll never get bored. It’s all up to you. As long as you want to stay in shape and give it your best, Calasanz has a lifetime of experience to pass on.

If you’re looking for practical self-defense, Street Survival may be for you. If you have a black belt in Karate, you may choose to round out your training with a softer style like Chinese Boxing or Wing Chun Kung Fu. If you’re looking to get into great physical shape, American Boxing may be for you.

Whether it’s THE CALASANZ SYSTEM™ as a whole or one of its components, you’ll never be bored! Let Calasanz and his Certified Personal Trainers create the program that’s right for you.

Single Blow and Street Survivor: Martial Art Courses for the Real World

Most martial artists will tell you that your chances of surviving abduction once an attacker gets you into his car are slim to none.  Their advice is to fight for your life because statistics show that the consequences are grim.  On Wednesday, July 28, 2004, Larissa del Mar Fiallo, was assaulted by two men who tried to kidnap her in the parking lot of a shopping mall.  The incident made international news because Ms. Fiallo is this year’s Miss Dominican Republic.  What interested us about the story reported by CNN.com (July 29, 2004) was that Ms. Fiallo was able to escape her attackers “thanks to her knowledge of judo.”  She explained how she fought back when the two men tried to get her into their car and how she knocked over the larger one three times.  Her attackers fled the scene and an investigation is pending. While Ms. Fiallo suffered deep cuts and bruises to various parts of her body, she survived the attack and was released from the hospital several days later.

Violent crime is on the rise in the Dominican Republica as the country faces one of the “worst economic crises in decades, according to CNN.com.  Calasanz was born and raised in this country where he learned about self-defense first hand.  His experience did not come from pre-arranged tournaments with competitors wearing padding and subjecting themselves to the rules and regulations of sparring.  He learned hand-to-hand combat in an environment where a man is routinely challenged to physically defend him and others.

Calasanz has combined his real life experience and martial arts training into two courses designed to serve the needs of a public interested in fitness and self-defense.  “While we teach traditional martial arts as part of our curriculum, if people request it, most want to get into shape and learn how to fight,” says Calasanz.  “They don’t want to spend years learning forms or weapons that were used in ancient societies. And they could care less about belts and stripes.”  Most of the students who train at Calasanz are busy executives, professionals and homemakers who want a curriculum that emphasizes fitness and self-defense.  “Many of my students travel for business and are concerned with their safety in an increasingly uncertain world.  They want to be prepared to defend themselves and their loved ones.”

The essence of the Single Blow and Street Survivor Courses is to strike where an attacker is most vulnerable and to get away.   Single Blow is our basic course designed for those who wish to learn a simple, effective form of self-defense in a short period of time.  Street Survivor is a more complex version of Single Blow, which includes more techniques and technical training.  The one feature that both courses have in common is Calasanz’ Body Conditioning System.  A defensive blow is useless unless the person delivering it is able to focus his or her power.  Calasanz has always believed that the study of self-defense begins with making a connection to your physical body and learning how to use it as a weapon.  It is from there that Calasanz and his trained instructors teach you his unique philosophy of counterattacks and how to use them in any situation.

We at Calasanz wish Ms. Fiallo a speedy recovery and commend her for her bravery in the face of extreme danger.  She serves as an example to all of us of why we study the martial arts. For those interested in either the Single Blow or Street Survivor Course, contact the school for a personal consultation.

Are you an individual that wants to become more competitive in athletics? by Calasanz

Are you trying to make the travel team instead of the rec. team? Possibly, you’re trying to be selected to the Varsity team instead of the J. V. team. College hockey may be your dream or maybe you just want to beat the Canadians when your team competes in Canada.

My system of training and exercise creates total body conditioning for any sport. It is a unique and simplistic system anyone can learn. We start with flexibility, stretching, and light weight exercises. We improve all athletic skills by teaching fully coordinated body movements. We teach an individual how to train aggressively yet intelligently. After the fundamentals are understood, we make your techniques sport specific for hockey.

The benefits of my system yields explosive leg power, improves stride length, and increases leg speed…as forearm and shoulder strength improves, as you will stick handling, soft hands, and wrist shot techniques improve. My system of hip movements will enhance your checking, slap shot, and taking skills. We will increase your hip flexion and hip extension strength. With years of training in my system, your peripheral vision will improve dramatically. Your foot speed, hand speed, concentration, and hand-eye coordination will all get noticeably better. We even teach breathing techniques to help you relax between shifts. The balance techniques we teach are unique to our system and are very, very effective

We utilize different exercises for male and female athletes. Our techniques for women maintain femininity yet increase strength and endurance beyond comparison. We incorporate plyometric exercises to improve and complement speed techniques. We work hard to build a strong foundation, so that when you begin lifting heavier weights to excel in Midget, Junior, or College hockey, you have developed total body strength and excellent flexibility, through our system of training.

We give you the mental strength to accept challenges you normally wouldn’t accept. We develop the physical strengths and confidence to accomplish those challenges. We use positive motivation techniques to help individuals achieve their desired results.

ALL HAPPENING THROUGH EXPERIENCE

The Calasanz System is effective because it is geared to helping students integrate mind, body and spirit.  Calasanz has noticed many students change not only physically but also mentally.  One of the important aspects of the Calasanz System is requiring students to teach.  Teaching not only helps the student develop his skill, but also helps him develop patience and the ability to think on his feet.  This is an important skill of a martial artist because he must be able to react very quickly to variety of situations.

It is very exciting to Calasanz to watch his students improve their martial arts skills. With proper training, students who have trained for a period of three months are performing techniques that are usually executed by professional martial artist. One of Calasanz goals for new students is to teach them how to train their bodies.  This requires students to discipline themselves. Calasanz constantly reminds students that their bodies may want to do one thing while their minds are going in another direction.  Integrating the two requires patience and a commitment by the student .Recently, Calasanz was coaching a student who had been training with him for three months. As he started going through drills with him, Calasanz could not believe how far this student had advanced in his training. The drills required the student to evade certain attacks by moving his body in different directions. Because of the student’s persistence and serious attitude toward training, he was very quick, flexible, and powerful in his movements. This is what the Calasanz System is all about.
