We here like to work by commitment.  Our programs are unique and effective.  Why?  Because we are not here to give you a good workout, although you will get the best lesson, the best workout of your life if you come here to learn.

We do not want people who come for a work out.  We want people who come to invest.  People who understand that their time spent here is an investment in themselves mentally, physically and spiritually.  Our school is called a school for a reason, because we are here to teach and to promote learning.  Real learning of real Martial Arts.

When it comes to martial arts it’s sometimes difficult to say what it is that has been learned but just understand that, during a lesson, within every word uttered and every vision captured there is a meaning and a message being conveyed.  Sometimes it is as simple as the opening of one’s eyes or the true comprehension of a sentence correctly interpreted in order to actualize real and proper change, real and proper learning.  Sometimes even a single word can be enough to spark a colossal shift within a person.

Note, noone on this Earth is perfect and we have all made our mistakes.  But now there is an ever growing need to push forward without looking back.  Towards a collaborative progression with the collective understanding of our reality’s great limitation;  that the past cannot be undone.  But the future holds all glorious potential within it.  It comes down to the question of, “Will we do what is necessary in the present to help that future come to fruition?”

So that is why we work under commitment.  In becoming a student anywhere there has already been an expectation levied on the teacher to teach, but this expectation is not one sided as the student is expected to learn or at least try to learn.  Will you open your mind to learning?  Will you allow yourself that creative freedom?  Will you take the responsibility to think for yourself?  To hold yourself accountable?  And will you give yourself that chance at self redemption?  At self creation?

Our school’s goal is to train you to train yourself.  We give you lessons, exercises and techniques and explain how to perform them without getting hurt.  Once you’ve learned them it is no longer up to us.  This is why we go by commitment.  Those committed, ready and willing to learn will do so.  Others may be missing one of those components and learn little.  Moving on, at a certain point it becomes up to you to see yourself through and continue on in a safe manner.  We do not take the role of a personal trainer to sit and watch you perform the exercises barking demands of [this many] sets at [such and such] resistance.  If you are an adult this is something you should be capable of safely putting yourself to do on your own without the need of an external whip.

Again, when we work your expectation of us is to be taught and our wish to teach you more  in our time spent with you.  After all, stagnancy is death…  So rather we would take the role of doctors in that we want to get you healthy or at least give you the tools and means to become so and get you out to the world.  We have a lot of patients to get to and you have your lives to live.  But as always our sincerely committed and dedicated students are greeted with great welcome upon their return as there is always more to learn and master.

Simply stated…Chi is the energy that powers life!

In Asia, Chi has been recognized and understood for millennia. It’s the basis for both Martial Arts and traditional Chinese medicine. It’s the universal energy field that taps the electromagnetic fields of our earth and our universe. Like radio waves or microwaves, it can’t be seen, but must be judged by the results it produces.

For many years, Calasanz has trained like a modern day shaolin monk, developing his chi and his martial arts skill through daily eighteen hour workouts in his dojo. It is Calasanz’s goal to help his students develop this awesome power, without having to engage in the grueling workouts he himself has endured throughout his years of training. To achieve this goal, he has referred his training system to help students access their Chi as quickly and as powerful as possible.

Chi is an inner gift that we all possess, that we must cultivate in order to reap its many rewards. The development of one’s chi takes patience, persistence, discipline and the repetition of techniques designed to stimulate this power. To develop his chi, a martial arts student must first understand the concept of “Go” (which means hard ), and “Ju” (which means soft), and its application in the execution of martial art techniques. Bruce Lee was a master of chi and because of this; he was able to deliver powerful blows with his hands, his feet and his entire energy system.

A student who is too hard or too soft in his practice is out of balance. The right combination of Go and Ju is necessary to help facilitate the chi and deliver its power. This is why Calasanz emphasizes proper technique, when training students. If a technique is sloppy, the chi can not be effectively directed toward its target. If the technique exerts too much energy, the chi is wasted, and the student will lack endurance. Styles such as certain styles of Karate, for example, are very “hard” or “Go” in their execution of techniques. While these styles are a brutal in their system of Karate, they also lack balance. Too much Go, not enough Ju. Proper balance of Go and Ju is what makes the Calasanz System of Karate & Kung-Fu effective and popular among its students.

Don’t Let Stress Get to You: by Calasanz

Many of you are having problems especially during these hard economic times. The stress and pressure that builds up in the mind and body prevents one from moving forward. My advice to you is to make sure that you stay healthy. You may not have control over the economy or what is the government is doing, but you do have control over taking care of your health. It is within your control to eat healthy, get adequate sleep and workout. There have been many times when we thought things were going to fall apart because of circumstances beyond our control. We then put our energy into those things we had some say over and slowly, we turned it around. Working out not only helps the body, but it gives the mind a break from worry so that you make room for more productive thoughts. Remember: body, mind and spirit!!!

Well Balanced: Based on Strong Stance.

Here at Calasanz Physical Arts we end up seeing and teaching a lot of students from other martial arts schools. The first thing I look for when evaluating them is a strong stance. Some have excellent stances while others are weak and wobbly. When it comes to stances it is easy to see what is effective and what is weak instantly. You can think of a stance as the architectural arrangement of your own body. In architecture, if the blueprint is good you will have a strong building that will be capable of managing gravity and will successfully maintain its structure when confronting forces from all angles. If the blueprint is poor the building will be incapable and will fail when encountering outside forces. When it comes to the structure of your body this is no different. A good stance is your foundation. It is where every motion spawns from. Without a strong foundational structure any thing growing from it, like a punch or kick, will be comparatively weak to the same punch or kick coming from a structure that is fundamentally sound. Without a good stance, all the fancy moves in the world are nothing but superfluous.

“Being grounded” means you’re connected to the earth. In martial arts, grounding is your ability to grip the floor or the ground beneath you in a good, solid stance. If you are well grounded, it’s harder for your opponent to throw you down or knock you off balance.

I recall an incident many years ago in my Wing Chun class in Chinatown, NY. A karate practitioner came into our school looking for a challenge. Be aware that this is not the type of thing that only happens in the movies, as I’ve experienced a lot of this juvenile behavior over the years from plenty of guys who felt they had something to prove. This guy kept trying to sweep me off my feet and try as he might he just couldn’t. Every time he came after my leg to sweep it, I dropped into a strong, grounded horse stance. My connection with the floor was so strong, even the full force of his sweep was unable to successfully accomplish the goal.

So, How do you develop good grounding? First of all, do a lot of stance work, it is simple, if you want a good stance you must practice it as with anything else. The biggest mistake a lot of new martial artists make is to quickly learn their basic stances and then never pay attention to them. Practicing stances, both stationary and moving (forwards and backwards) should be done routinely.

The benefits that come from the simple act of holding a strong stance are often overlooked and really there is no better way to develop good grounding. The old-timers used to love to see how long they could hold a horse stance and this is really a good practice. Get into a good horse stance, do not move your feet and watch the clock. See how long you can hold it until your legs literally start to shake and you feel like you just can’t take it anymore. Log your time and work on increasing your time. You will see how strong your legs get and how powerful your stance becomes. Remember, martial artists who practice grounding exercises don’t need to do squats, leg curls or leg extensions in a gym, their grounding practice develops their legs properly and naturally without the risk of serious injury.

You can also practice your stance work with a partner. Get into a stance and have your partner try to get you off balance. This will test the strength of your stance. Another exercise I like to do at my school is to have one partner push their opponent, while he or she drops into a strong stance. This gets you accustomed to grounding while in motion. You can practice this with any basic stance within your style.

Next, pay close attention to your stances while practicing katas. Be aware of your foundational structure and make sure that with each transition, your stances are strong and grounded. Putting some effort behind your stances not only improves your katas, but you’ll notice that you have more control over your legwork when fighting. You will grip the ground better when necessary and your supporting leg will be rooted enough so you can deliver strong kicks with precision and balance. In the end a strong stance is the best place for any martial artists to start!

Simplicity in Martial Arts: The Beauty and Reality of the Calasanz System

Our system is based on style, logic, facts, and reality but above all else, the Calasanz System’s focuses on common sense. If you study the word “Zen,” it has a broad philosophy and trying to understand it is as difficult as trying to understand the Calasanz System. If you wanted to understand Zen, as compared to the Calasanz System, the key term of knowing what Zen is and the system is “simplicity.” The Calasanz System can be learned by someone in a few simple techniques.

Simplicity has been forgotten, mostly because martial arts have come so far in the world but it still works and is utilized in the Calasanz System. But simplicity can also be infinite, meaning you can spend two lifetimes just trying to learn the basics and the ins and outs of the system.  Imagine trying to read and understand thousands of books, if you took one percent of each book you would know the meaning of the entire book. Bunkai

Since I have gone back to one-on-one personal training, which is what I did for 28 years, my entire concept here is to get people more involved in their own bodies and to make them understand anatomy.

In martial arts and fitness there is something called “BUNKAI,” which is part of understanding not just what you do, but being able to see it from the inside out. That is why during the past six months, anyone who trains here with Jeff, Louis, Adam, or Alex, Calasanz will spend at least a half hour per month with them. Here we apply Bunkai, which is the understanding and analysis, not just of the techniques, but the human anatomy which will immediately give the student more understanding of what they are doing and what they could do to improve. As a result of Bunkai, their training will become easier and more effective. Calasanz bases these skills off of science training, which is the same as saying this is “SATORO,” meaning I understand it better now, but you are conscious that you understand it.

Imagine how many intelligent, educated people train or study martial arts. One thing that is missing in them is that some are not aware of their own physical body which is one of the skill Calasanz studied but he was also born with a gift that makes him a great instructor. Calasanz is not gifted in Karate or Kung Fu, but he is aware of the inside out of fitness and that has allowed him to put together thousands, even millions of techniques and exercises called Physical Arts.

WHAT IS NATURAL POWER? by Calasanz

Calasanz was about nine years old when he noticed a man insulting a lady. That man was around 22 years old, tall, and physically fit. Even at a young age, Calasanz defended the lady. If no one intervened, the fight may have ended badly for the man. I trapped this man’s head on a fence covered with barbed wire and I was choking him. I was a strong kid and thankfully for that guy, someone broke up the fight.

I was loved and famous since I was two years old with most of my fame coming from dancing, singing, and working harder than anyone else on the farm. At the age of seven I was milking 20 cows. On top of being so strong, I had high energy and my parents could not control me. One particular fight was against a young man named Alvarado who was insulting my cousin Jose.  Jose was not fighting back, so I jumped to his defense. Alvarado was older and twice my size and normally would have helped defend me did not have to interfere because I was kicking Alvarado so hard that all he could do was try to survive. This fight even became popular among the neighbors and was talked about for quite some time. I kicked like a mule in that fight. What I did to Alvarado back then was karate. I was able to teach my five year old brother how to counter attack. My brother got into a fight one day and applied what I taught him and at one point punched a kid so hard that he was down for almost three minutes. There were some bad kids around; we were the well behaved, educated kids, who did not take abuse from anyone.

Now I can reflect back to when I played softball. I was young, responsible, popular, and I worked at a bank. The bank had a softball league, so they convinced me to play, knowing that as a kid, I was a very good player.  Even though at this point in life, I was dedicated to martial arts and stopped playing other sports like baseball and softball. I decided to play the season and we won the championship. I gained popularity by hitting the ball so hard. All the players would laugh at me when I stepped up to the plate but I always turned those laughs around by getting hit after hit. During one of the games, a teammate and police officer named Brian, who was as big as a football player, and me weighing 120 pounds, both went to catch a fly ball. Second before Brian crashed into me, he screamed and said, “Look who I am crashing into today.” Brian ended up getting the worst of the collision and almost cried.  I was 16 years old and just 120 pounds.

A Lifetime of Lessons – Calasanz Extended Biography: The Early Years – Part One

I was raised on a farm in the Dominican Republic.  One of my earliest memories of the fighting arts was through my father’s fascination with boxing.  I remember how he used to get excited every time his favorite boxer landed a punch.  My father wanted me to be a boxer.  He and some of his brothers were considered the strongest men on the farm.  He noticed the same family traits in me and encouraged me to go into boxing. He saw at an early age that I had natural talent and power. He even offered to sponsor my career in it.  Although I didn’t take the path of a boxer, my father respected the fact that despite my power, I was not a bully.  Being exposed to boxing as a young child, I always knew that I wanted to be a fighter but I didn’t see the point of two people getting into the ring to fight for no reason.  The mission behind my desire to be a fighter wasn’t about titles, trophies or glory.  It was about self-defense and defense of others.  It was about sticking up for the underdog. It was about survival.

As a kid, I was very creative and liked to entertain people in town by singing and dancing.  I was also a very hard working farm boy and my family and neighbors took notice.  So did my classmates who were very jealous of the attention I was getting in the neighborhood.  I started having problems in school and knew that at some point, I was going to have to stand up for myself.  I didn’t tell my parents what was going on and resolved to deal with the problems myself.  While part of me was scared, another part of me was very excited.  I had always identified with the underdog and was a defender of those who were picked on or unable to fight back.

I remember one day when I was ten years old, my father sent me downtown on a horse to pick up a 200-pound bag of rice.  As made my way back home, I noticed a man insulting one of the women in my neighborhood.  I yelled at him to leave her alone, but he yelled back “Listen little rabbit, you are too small to tell me what to do.”  I jumped off the horse and went after this guy who was about three times my size and age.  I fought as hard as I could.  Finally someone broke up the fight.  I thought I was going to choke him to death!!  My father found out about it and told me never to do that again, especially against someone who had so much physical advantage.  The woman never forgot what I did for her that day.  That was the greatest reward.

It was at this time that I also realized the power that could be generated in the legs.  I was milking one of our cows, which was in a particularly bad mood that day.  So she kicked me!  I got so angry that I got up, took a step back and kicked her in the stomach, knocking her down.  My father saw what I had done and gave me a spanking.  Even though I was being punished, I couldn’t believe what I had done.

Soft and Hard Techniques in the Martial Arts: by Calasanz

I chose to master the style of Goju Ryu, mostly because of its’ beautiful techniques and ancient while modern at the same time application of distinguished, overlaying soft and hard techniques. For both combat and health, Goju Ryu requires the body to achieve a state of physical and mental balance based on the distinction between hard and soft, fast and slow, heavy and light, erect and angled – in short, Yin and Yang, a subtle yet strong distinction between these extremes is what creates enormous power.

The mind learns a logical use of self-consciousness and feelings for your inner self. It creates a real understanding inside and outside your own physical body with the universe.

The science behind this power is quite simply – the ability to produce flexible, fluid, constant power by way of training the body to issue a sureness of movement in a variety of cadences, angles, and speeds. And it is through practicing forms that are difficult to master, but highly practical, that eventually high skill is achieved.

Mastering forms on daily basis develops the explosive power of flexible strength. It is best revealed when the body achieves a relaxed, controlled, and natural ability to move efficiently between the forces of soft and hard – Yin and Yang.
