For years, Calasanz has tirelessly worked to take care of his students. Back in the day, Calasanz scheduled a big promotion date on a Saturday and those who were scheduled to help at the last minute were not able to attend. Instead of canceling, Calasanz tested 120 students himself. This included coaching, holding boards for breaking, registering, taking registration fees, making change and encouraging each student to do his or her best. Calasanz did the work of 10 people that day and all the students who worked hard and prepared for months were able to test and get promoted.

In honor of Calasanz 30th year of martial art excellence, he will be repeating this feat again and testing all his students by himself upstairs! This kind of event is special and rare. He has only done this a few times over his long illustrious career in the martial arts! Students will be able to schedule their test from 4am to 11pm on Saturday February 16th. This test will be filmed by a professional videographer and still photos will be taken. Internet links will be distributed to corresponding students in order to view your personal results online.

Many students from the past who know who Calasanz really is, will be here in order to honor this special occasion. Some of them will be testing and or participating in a 5 minute video recording. This day should be about ours students and their test with Calasanz.

PREVENTING INJURIES: by Calasanz

I like to especially keep a close eye on beginners who are either too enthusiastic or come from other systems. I had a student who initially trained in a martial art style that uses a lot of “snapping” kicks and punches.  As I watched her on the floor snapping away, my first reaction was “how long can she keep doing this before she really hurts herself?” I approached her about this and she said “yeah, I have to stop this because I have a knee problem!”  I told her that if she continued, she’d have to quit completely. It took a lot of work to get her to slow down and change her old habits. The rest of the students in her class were being taught properly…learn to throw the kick with control and balance and slowly work your way up to a power kick.  Snapping leads to injuries and a very short career in the martial arts.

When An Instructor Corrects You…Be Happy! by Calasanz

It is the obligation of a martial arts instructor to correct his students’ technique and attitude. Some students are grateful that their instructor cares enough about their training to say something. Others find this offensive, and may even put the instructor in the same category as an “an employee.”

I was trained by “old school” instructors who wouldn’t hesitate to humiliate and embarrass you. I’ve learned over the years that getting angry or overwhelming students gets me no where. I had to learn to adjust and be more flexible in my approach when making corrections. This doesn’t mean that I stopped…just adjusted.

For example, if I’m telling you to make sure you pull your non-striking hand into chamber when executing a traditional karate punch. Let’s say I’ve had to correct you three times and you still didn’t listen. Then asking you to drop down and do 10 push-ups would be a reasonable request! This correction is very direct and to the point.

Other forms of correction are subtle and indirect. Sometimes it’s important to take into account the student’s personality. What works with one person, does not work with another. A teenager I was training was terribly uncoordinated. I used every ounce of skill I had to get him to improve, but nothing worked. My choice was to either throw up my hands and send him home or wait until he matured. The most promising thing about this student was his attitude and willingness to calmly work through the corrections I made. Eventually, he started coming around.

Another example was one of my best students, who trained with me for 8 years. He reached a point in his training where he was burned out and arrogant. He wouldn’t accept corrections from anyone and had a horrible attitude. The last time we saw him, he was gently corrected for performing a sit-up improperly. Instead of going head to head with him, we left him alone and he left the school. A while later, I received a 4 page letter from him, thanking me for the lesson we taught him, just by letting him spin in his own anger. He later saw for himself what he was doing wrong and how his attitude got in his way.

Whether it’s a direct or indirect correction of attitude or technique, it is the only way to progress as a martial art student. Accept what the teacher has to offer and be grateful for the attention. All it means is that your instructor wants you to progress physically and mentally. Anything less and you would be wasting your money.

DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE DAMAGE IS DONE! The Importance of Good Martial Art Basics for Kids: by Calasanz

As a parent, you send your child to school with the expectation that he or she will learn the basics. Basics are the building blocks of a good, solid education. As a parent, I’m sure you’d be quite upset if your child’s school to failed to teach the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic before your child moved on to more complex subjects. Why is it that parents don’t have the same expectations when it comes to martial arts training? As long as the kid is “having fun,” who cares about the basics? As long as the school gives out a lot of belts, patches and certificates to make the child “feel good,” so what?

Many parents unknowingly fall into this trap. It is vital that good basic techniques and proper body mechanics are emphasized at the beginning of your child’s martial arts training. A child’s joints are developing and care should be taken to train the child slowly and carefully to avoid long-term damage. Emphasizing good techniques that develop proper balance and coordination is key to teaching a child how to control his or her body.

There is a tendency to wait until the child is older to explain the reasons for executing techniques properly and to make physical corrections. This, in my opinion is a big mistake. Unfortunately, once bad habits are formed, they are very hard to break. We see this in children who come to us from other systems. We can easily tell if a child’s previous instructor spent any time creating a good foundation. While some schools do a great job, others fail miserably. Now we have to spend the time helping the student correct the damage already done!

Teaching children is not easy and when you have a lot of them in one room, the instructor may not have the patience, skill or even manpower to make sure that the child is moving properly. Others simply just don’t care. The consequences of this attitude, however, may result in serious injuries that may damage your child for the rest of his or her life.

Demand the same attention to basics in your child’s martial arts program. While having fun and developing “self-esteem” is nice, you wouldn’t feel the same way if your child couldn’t read because he or she never learned the alphabet!

Children are taught to know themselves at Calasanz Martial Arts.

Calasanz has spent many years working primarily with children and has proven to himself that he can get his message across even to young minds. Other instructors have asked him, “What is your secret? How do you teach martial arts to children so young?” The answer is simple. Calasanz explains that he emphasizes basic techniques which help at a range of different levels.

When Calasanz first went into business and began to promote childrens’ classes a lot of parents were scared to enroll their children at the school. By this time Calasanz had earned a reputation in the area for producing some of the toughest fighters. What the parents did not see and were not aware of is that while Martial Arts training can produce a tough and durable fighter, real Martial Arts training teaches people not to fight. Calasanz emphasizes defense and respect for your Martial Arts knowledge and abilities. He teaches children never to be the aggressor and not to strike your friends, brothers or sisters because they could hurt somebody with their ability.

When it comes to childrens’ martial arts training there innumerable benefits to be reaped from such a pursuit, not all of which are physical. In traditional school or community team sports some children don’t make the final cut to get on the team and while some schools and community programs have tried to remedy this at the end of the day even those that make the team may spend a good deal of time on the bench. In martial arts training every child, regardless of their capabilities is welcomed and capable of practicing and improving themselves. This gives a child a sense of pride, that yes they can participate within a group, and yes, they can engage in physical activity.

Another benefit of the Calasanz System is that a code of conduct is put into place which promotes self-discipline, respect, and courtesy. Those whose purpose of studying martial arts to gain an aggressive edge are quickly set straight. Calasanz encourages a positive respectful attitude both inside and outside of the school.

Training in martial arts will also greatly improve a child’s concentration and attention span. It will increase their physical fitness as well sharpen their mental abilities.

Children who practice the martial arts become aware of their surroundings.

So what type of improvement do children see from the Calasanz system? Well, all of the above plus many amazing physical improvements. Improved coordination, balance, strength, power, grounding, and focus. Through the practicing of drills, coaching, sparring, forms, and katas your children will have strengthened joints and a basic knowledge of aerobic isolation and isometric movements which gives the Calasanz system its unique qualities and ultimately its name.

All of these improvements not only increase a child’s performance in their particular sport, but also in all other areas of their lives. The Calasanz System focuses on building a child by improving not only their body but also their character.

Calasanz Martial Arts and Fitness: Basic Philosophies – by Calasanz

WHAT YOU NEED TO FIGHT

You can have all the technique in the world but that doesn’t necessarily make you a good competitive fighter. Good technique is important, but more importantly, do you have the heart of a fighter?  If you get hit, do you lose your concentration?  Can you shake it off and remain composed? If you answered “yes,” then you have the fighting spirit.  Competitive fighting is different from street fighting. On the streets, you fight to ward off a non-deadly attack and to kill when confronted with a deadly attack. In the dojo or ring it’s different.  I don’t let students fight in the school unless they have control and can compose themselves after being hit.  The person who lacks composure is out of control and gets himself hurt.

THE GROUND

If you enjoy fighting and rolling on the ground go for it! But there are ways of avoiding most ground fights by training under the Calasanz Karate, Kung Fu, Kickboxing, boxing and physical arts. Ground fighting or not, under the Calasanz system you’ll still become a better fighter faster. Calasanz says, “I have said all along under this system that you can be a decent fighter without sparring or fighting but if you choose it then you can get the training that is necessary, including heavy drills. If you want to fight under in the MMA system you should go for some ground-training no matter what.”

BRUTALITY

Many student who are serious about the Martial Arts, would never understand that there is a way of becoming a decent fighter without brutality, but immediately you discover that you really want to be more than a decent fighter, meaning being a competitor then things all change, since the early 80s Calasanz has proved demonstrated that logic over and over, he trained some students that went beyond of being decent fighter when they stepped on the ring with some well trained competitor and they have won, this concept was proved over and over. We did that since the early 80s. Be brutal in your training, but still follow a basic discipline at the beginning of your workout. Calasanz Aerobic Kickboxing

Calasanz approach to non-contact, aerobic kickboxing is a unique total body workout that combines cardio, resistance and flexibility training. It’s also a great calorie burner, according to a study conducted by the American Exercise Counsel, which revealed that kickboxing burns hundreds and hundreds of calories per hour. Calasanz Aerobic Kickboxing curriculum is based on over 20 years of experience in martial arts instruction and was developed long before kickboxing became popular in health clubs and figure salons.

In this course, you will first learn the basic conditioning exercises outlined in Calasanz book, Creating the Body You Want, as well as how to stretch properly to avoid injuries. The kickboxing component of the course begins with learning upper body techniques. This includes punches associated with kick boxing – jab, cross, hook and uppercut, as well as elbow strikes. You also learn how to move in a proper fighting stance and how to move forward, backward, and side- to-side. Lower body technique instruction consists of learning front kicks, side kicks, roundhouse kicks and back kicks. The Calasanz blocking system is also part of this curriculum and teaches you how to ward-off an opponent. Once you have learned the basic techniques, you will combine the upper and lower body strikes in a series of combinations designed to give you the maximum aerobic effect. The instructor employs the use of focus mitts and air shields so that you can test your striking techniques on a padded surface. Bruce Lee was and is still my inspiration in the world of martial arts. When I came to this country a friend of mine brought me a copy of Lee’s book, “Tao of Jeet Kune Do,” and when I read it, I said I wanted to be as good as Bruce, especially because everything he wrote, all his notes, and philosophy was what I believed and was what I was already doing.

Even many years ago when I was just a child, a strong child growing up on a farm, I figured out how to bring a cow to the ground by looking how the animal was proportioned.  I noticed this gap on the cow’s belly so I used to step towards the cow by stepping with one foot behind my other, then I exploded into the cow with a heel kick knocking it down, sometimes for over a minute, then it got right back up and went about its business as usual eating hay and such.

I could not believe the same kick I used on the cow was the same kick I saw Bruce Lee performing in a film clip while demonstrating Chinese boxing. When Bruce would strike, he put his hips and body into every strike, which is something I have been doing all my life, and right there and then I knew I had a natural gift for martial arts.

Another trait of mine that follows Bruce’s way of thinking is that I never followed what everyone else was doing.  A great example was when I went to a karate school and noticed a couple of guys striking each other. They were going blow for blow without any real attempt to block. So I said to myself “you are telling me the person with the strongest gut was going to come out on top?” To me, that was not what the martial arts is all about, so I left for three months to train on my own and work on the things I deemed important as opposed to what everyone else was doing. When that time was up I was able to easily challenge and beat anyone in that school, including the instructors.

Wasting Money at Other Schools and Seminars: by Calasanz

Many martial artists spend so much money for training that if they went and looked over their bank accounts, they would be shocked how much they wasted. Those that decide to attend a certain school or go to seminars like the ones that will not be mentioned by name hold, where you just watch people perform and get a certification handed to you, end up costing people thousands of unnecessary dollars. Once the strikers came into the MMA world, some of these type of fighters were finished and some of their students came to me to learn how to be a better stand-up fighter. This is not a knock on ground fighting but I do not teach ground work because I teach my students not to end up on the ground by building strong fighters and very good strikers. Some of my students like Chris Mottola, Kevin McIntyre, Rod, Darryl Dash, Rodney, or Peter are very difficult to bring down but if a fight ended up on the ground, they still have a great chance to win the fight. Going back even further, when I was a child on the farm and ended up in a fight, if it went to the ground I always came out on top because I was born with a gift for martial arts.

One of my former students and best friends, a talented wrestler and judo practitioner named Mike is guilty of spending too much money for training ever since he moved away. Even though Mike is training on his own now, he spent lots of money at various schools, flying out to seminars and competitions when he has time, when he should be teaching. I care because Mike is a friend and it hurt to see him pay all that money when he could have gotten all his training and learned how to be an instructor with me for a lot less.

I hope that someday Mike will return to Connecticut so I can help him establish himself as an instructor, to teach with me, and continue his evolution as a martial artist. Martial artists and future martial artists can learn from me for less cost and gain more knowledge at my school than at any expensive seminar.

Understanding the Martial Arts: Beauty, Power, Style, Balance and Reality

Calasanz was born with a gift to understand martial arts because he was able to see the beauty, power, style, balance and reality of it at early years of his life. Above all else, Calasanz had the understanding that martial arts should not be primarily used for fighting purposes but as a way of life or around your life, especially when you follow its principles. Having a strong core, possessing good chi, and at the same time, the feeling of being yourself, are all possible with a martial arts background.

His system’s popularity started immediately when Calasanz began to demonstrate the reality of the martial arts, following his hero Bruce Lee. Mainly what made him recognized in a very short period of time was the beauty and style that he was able to bring to the public.  Calasanz also built his name by training students to be fighters without having to be competitors.

People who train at Calasanz do so because they want to learn something that they can take home. Bruce Lee Said “I came to this world of martial arts to prove that an old tradition can be changed. Calasanz believes that you can add to an old tradition but you never can change it. If you strive to be more, if you want to be more successful than what you are, then you should train in martial arts.
