(Continued from part 1) Being sent to the city to study and immediately taking this journey of wanting to be the most educated person with just one purpose: to get a good job at a good company. Already having received the news from one of the best accountants in the Dominican Republic, Filiberto Rodriguez, and at this point was teaching all sorts of clerical business on his School (Academia “Las Mercedes”), Calasanz finished high school and was sent to Popular Bank one of the biggest banks in operation.

Calasanz soon felt uncomfortable because he knew that there was something better waiting for him, and did not waste time. Because of achieving so many diplomas, the bank would let me go to study and specialize in English as a second language in order to get much higher position, and this was very early in his career. All in Calasanz mind was going to America and making a movie with this he believed he would be just like Bruce Lee, but soon he realized after coming to the US, that was much more than just being like Bruce Lee.

In the beginning he even yelled and made sounds like Bruce Lee, and then he said to himself; “wait a minute I can be myself and I don’t need any to use from anybody else because of the ability I was born with”.

When he got to Bridgeport University in Connecticut he was the talk of the town. In less than one week he was know all over Bridgeport, and this was all based on his training methods but specifically because of his immense athletic ability which was seen in his jumping kicks and that nobody else could come close to imitate.

One month later he called the bank, I just told Mr Simon Castro who was the Vice-President of the bank, “I am staying in America, the dream is too beyond to let it go, I am making a movie and I will be Bruce Lee or as famous as Bruce Lee”.

Calasanz Life in the martial arts has been completely about showing what is inside the Art of Martial arts. He feels that even still after Bruce Lee brought to the screen a sense of emotion, expression, style, beauty of the martial arts and introduced it to the world before anybody else, today many still can not grasp the concept of this.

Calasanz considers himself as being born with this gift to understand that there is much more to the martial arts. It is not just kicking, punching, going to the ground, shooting, striking somebody with a weapon, etc, but rather, there is reality, beauty, style, balance, grounding, flexibility, endurance, conditioning, posture, stance, reflect, pride, character, success, intelligence, etc. and all of this is part of Kung Fu and the martial arts. Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Boxing, Mauy Thai boxing, American and Recreational boxing, this is was Calasanz believes and the understanding of the art of martial arts which indeed can be real, but it can be beautiful and stylistic at the same time.

A Calasanz’s Quotation, “Since I was a baby, a kid and a teenager, there was something that was beyond me, because of the age I could not understand, later on I could understand what was inside me”.

What brought the realization to Calasanz that something was beyond him? Calasanz going to the movies with his father and seeing Bruce Lee’s “Enter the Dragon”. It opened a new career direction and a clear idea of who Calasanz was, could and wanted to be. (To be continued!)

InterDojo.com – The Past, Present and Future: by Calasanz

The Past

For the past several years I have been working diligently to put my system into a format that is accessible to people all over the world, not just the population close to my headquarters in Norwalk, CT.  Believe me, this has been no easy task with 30 years of training, teaching, and living the martial arts up to 18 hours a day!  I had so much information I wanted to release to the world, and to do that I started to produce the Formula Video Instructional Series.

Shortly after I started making The Formula Video Series a student suggested that I put all my videos into a format that could be delivered to people online.  I thought it was a tremendous idea and we immediately met with a software company and the InterDojo was born!

The First edition of the InterDojo featured a free section and a paid section.  The free section we posted a free video every week for anyone who was kind enough to leave us their contact information.  The paid section consisted of only a video vault with about 20 Formula Videos and 30 Archive Videos.  Formula Videos of course being the instructional series of my system and Archive Videos being a collection of 30 years of video of me and my students in action.

 The Present

Today the InterDojo is also comprised of a free section and a paid section, however both are now more sophisticated then the predecessor.

In the paid section, the video vault has now been converted to a multi-media vault and is able to house not only video but also pictures, audio files, and PDF files.  This is a great feature as it allows me more options to deliver information to subscribers!  The media vault has over 260 videos now!  Over 150 Formula Videos and over 100 Archive Videos!  We have also started to add other media as well.

We’ve also added a broadcast TV channel we call Calasanz TV!  It is available for free and has a line up selected Archive Videos a few Formula Videos and Group Classes you can participate in from home!  Calasanz TV also allows us to broadcast live events such as fights, open houses, special seminars, and webinars, live from the Calasanz dojos.

 The Future

I have been blessed (or cursed) with the ability to function with only 2-3 hours of sleep at night.  So while your sound asleep at 3AM, I’m up thinking of Formula Videos to film.  I have a list on my PC with over 3500 that I want to produce!  Don’t believe me?  Stop by the dojo and I’ll be happy to show you or give us a call at 800-414-9544 for more information.  Great things are to come in the future for InterDojo.com. and we hope you are with us to see it!

Calasanz 30th Anniversary Dojo Testing Special to be held on February 16th, 2013

For years, Calasanz has tirelessly worked to take care of his students. Back in the day, Calasanz scheduled a big promotion date on a Saturday and those who were scheduled to help at the last minute were not able to attend. Instead of canceling, Calasanz tested 120 students himself. This included coaching, holding boards for breaking, registering, taking registration fees, making change and encouraging each student to do his or her best. Calasanz did the work of 10 people that day and all the students who worked hard and prepared for months were able to test and get promoted.

In honor of Calasanz 30th year of martial art excellence, he will be repeating this feat again and testing all his students by himself upstairs! This kind of event is special and rare. He has only done this a few times over his long illustrious career in the martial arts! Students will be able to schedule their test from 4am to 11pm on Saturday February 16th. This test will be filmed by a professional videographer and still photos will be taken. Internet links will be distributed to corresponding students in order to view your personal results online.

Many students from the past who know who Calasanz really is, will be here in order to honor this special occasion. Some of them will be testing and or participating in a 5 minute video recording. This day should be about ours students and their test with Calasanz.

PREVENTING INJURIES: by Calasanz

I like to especially keep a close eye on beginners who are either too enthusiastic or come from other systems. I had a student who initially trained in a martial art style that uses a lot of “snapping” kicks and punches.  As I watched her on the floor snapping away, my first reaction was “how long can she keep doing this before she really hurts herself?” I approached her about this and she said “yeah, I have to stop this because I have a knee problem!”  I told her that if she continued, she’d have to quit completely. It took a lot of work to get her to slow down and change her old habits. The rest of the students in her class were being taught properly…learn to throw the kick with control and balance and slowly work your way up to a power kick.  Snapping leads to injuries and a very short career in the martial arts.

The Martial Arts Alternative: Choosing the Martial Arts for Physical Fitness – By Calasanz

Have you ever considered the martial arts alternative? Many adults are disgusted with the run-of-the-mill fitness centers and have looked to the martial arts as a way to get into shape. Martial art training can provide you with all the benefits of physical exercise without the circus-type atmosphere of the average health club.

The traditional martial arts curriculum is designed to develop your overall fitness level. Classes always include some flexibility training in the form of stretching exercises. The various movements and techniques that you practice during class help develop your cardiovascular health, as well as stamina and focus. The modern martial arts instructor welcomes students who are looking for a fitness alternative and has gone out of his or her way to incorporate strength training either with lightweights and/ or resistance exercises.

When you go to a gym, you may get a few sessions with a personal trainer as part of your membership package. Once that’s finished, you’re basically on your own unless you want to pay for more sessions. What’s nice about martial art training is that as you advance through the curriculum through some type of belt or sash grading system, more is expected of you physically. By following the curriculum laid out by your instructor, you progress to higher levels of fitness. In the meantime, you are learning to defend yourself!

Martial arts classes are also fun! Working through the various levels in the style you have chosen is both challenging and exciting. You’ll have a sense of pride and accomplishment that you’ll never get jogging aimlessly on some treadmill!

Dealing with Troublemakers – Rival Schools and Street Fighters: by Calasanz

If you’re going to open a martial arts school, please beware that you will have to deal with troublemakers. You know what I’m talking about. You’ve seen the martial arts movie where a karate teacher is busy teaching class for example, and all of a sudden, a bunch of clowns from a rival school show up and want to fight. If you think this scene only happens in the movies, you are sorely mistaken. It is not uncommon to have challengers come into a martial art school looking for a fight. As the proprietor of a martial arts school, I have seen troublemakers come in many forms, some subtle, some not so subtle. If you plan on running a martial art club, you really need to understand how this can happen and what to do about it.

We once had a rival school send a drug-crazed maniac who walked into a class with the purpose of hurting people. Another sent two women who openly wanted to challenge our female instructors. One of these women actually lunged at me! These people are dangerous intruders bent on violence. We have not hesitating in resorting to legal action by calling the police and getting our lawyers involved. As the head instructor, you are responsible for the safety of your students. Send someone else to call 911, while you try to calm the situation down before the police arrive.

Most troublemakers don’t come in packs like they do in the martial arts movies. Very often, a rival school or local street fighter registers as a student with your club and his primary goal is to challenge your students and pick fights. These people are not interested in forms, technique, or fitness. Martial art schools don’t like to turn paying students away, so I take a “wait and see” attitude. If a perspective student is so obnoxious, you are within your rights to reject him as a member of your club and tell him to go elsewhere.

Street fighters want to prove themselves. They are there to fight. I usually handle these people myself or delegate their training to an experienced fighter/instructor who will be able to handle him skillfully. I built my first school on local street fighters who came here for a challenge and ended up being loyal students. Individuals from rival schools are there to cause trouble. They are either sent by their instructors or are there on their own. Their mission is to check out your operation and cause disruptions. This comes in the form of challenges to you or your students. They will also berate your style or the way you do things. Again, I usually handle these people myself or pair them off with a skilled fighter/instructor. Whether it’s the blatant challenge or the Trojan Horse, always be vigilant. While the challenges are not as dramatic as they are in the movies, they do exist. This is a business that tends to attract this type of element.

The Benefits of Personalized Attention in Martial Arts Training: by Calasanz

I have built a successful martial arts business by tailoring techniques to suit the specific needs of my students. I don’t operate like a traditional school that has a one size fits all approach. In most schools, you have to fit their mold. If you don’t, you’re left behind. My approach makes martial arts training accessible to a wider audience, so anyone can enjoy its benefits.

One of our students is a 60 year old woman who while training in The Calasanz System, became interested in the art of Wing Chun. I was delighted when she showed an interest in this style since it was created by a woman and would be perfect for her! She had been struggling with some knee problems for a long time and they were particularly bothering her during Wing Chun class. I took her aside and worked with her.

What I focused was her ability to use her entire body when she would slide or pivot to perform a block or strike. Her major problem was improper alignment. She was forcing her knees to help her pivot or slide from side to side. I told her to even out her posture and to imagine a straight line running from the top of her head, through her spine and down to the floor. I showed her how to move her body so that her whole body was in alignment. In no time, she was moving pain free and is still enjoying her Wing Chun training! Without the proper attention and adjustments, I would have lost this student.

In some classes, this issue would have gone unnoticed because the instructor doesn’t have the time or desire to personalize training. Students come in all shapes, sizes, and ability to follow class instructions. Taking the time to make the proper corrections and personalize a students training helps avoid injuries and prevent drop outs!

When An Instructor Corrects You…Be Happy! by Calasanz

It is the obligation of a martial arts instructor to correct his students’ technique and attitude. Some students are grateful that their instructor cares enough about their training to say something. Others find this offensive, and may even put the instructor in the same category as an “an employee.”

I was trained by “old school” instructors who wouldn’t hesitate to humiliate and embarrass you. I’ve learned over the years that getting angry or overwhelming students gets me no where. I had to learn to adjust and be more flexible in my approach when making corrections. This doesn’t mean that I stopped…just adjusted.

For example, if I’m telling you to make sure you pull your non-striking hand into chamber when executing a traditional karate punch. Let’s say I’ve had to correct you three times and you still didn’t listen. Then asking you to drop down and do 10 push-ups would be a reasonable request! This correction is very direct and to the point.

Other forms of correction are subtle and indirect. Sometimes it’s important to take into account the student’s personality. What works with one person, does not work with another. A teenager I was training was terribly uncoordinated. I used every ounce of skill I had to get him to improve, but nothing worked. My choice was to either throw up my hands and send him home or wait until he matured. The most promising thing about this student was his attitude and willingness to calmly work through the corrections I made. Eventually, he started coming around.

Another example was one of my best students, who trained with me for 8 years. He reached a point in his training where he was burned out and arrogant. He wouldn’t accept corrections from anyone and had a horrible attitude. The last time we saw him, he was gently corrected for performing a sit-up improperly. Instead of going head to head with him, we left him alone and he left the school. A while later, I received a 4 page letter from him, thanking me for the lesson we taught him, just by letting him spin in his own anger. He later saw for himself what he was doing wrong and how his attitude got in his way.

Whether it’s a direct or indirect correction of attitude or technique, it is the only way to progress as a martial art student. Accept what the teacher has to offer and be grateful for the attention. All it means is that your instructor wants you to progress physically and mentally. Anything less and you would be wasting your money.

BALANCED IN EVERY WAY OF LIFE: by Calasanz

I have noticed many times, immediately when someone gets overwhelmed with work the first thing is stop exercising, or training in the martial arts. When I refer to martial arts, I am talking about quality schools; a school where you learn what martial arts has to offer in a traditional, or even in a recreational way, without being a joke. Too many students train in karate, jujitsu, tae-kwan-do, etc, and the instructor just rewards them for everything they do, but the last thing they are learning is the beauty of the art which is based on other principles of life other than just being rewarded.

When you train in martial arts, it is just a way to feel better, to strengthen your joints, your balance, your grounding. You must feel that you don’t have to just hurt someone, it is for fighting but it the way of the warrior, so fighting must be part of what you are leaning, that is the part that differentiates you from other people. Someone is swinging at you, and you are avoiding their attack without hitting the person.

When talking about the Calasanz System, this is martial arts that is completely balanced all around, develops your confidence, self esteem, balance, flexibility, joint strength, and can rehabilitate any part of your body which has been injured before. Learning self-defense techniques the Calasanz way, we make sure that you understand what works and what does not work. Learning something that you do not have to think, your body does it as muscle memory, you get pushed you recover into a balance, somebody swings, and you duck or move the head out of the way.

Martial arts means putting the time in to do things better, dealing with your friends better, with more confidence, including your family, wife and children better, so martial arts just mean success and balance in every way of your life.
